Mukdenia rossii ‘Crimson Fans’
A very cool and desirable form of this exceedingly attractive but uncommon Japanese woodland perennial. While the species itself has great form, with distinctive maple-like leaves in neat clumps, this one is extra special. It emerges dark bronzy green in early spring, but quickly takes on the burgundy color that it will hold all summer into fall. And in fall the color intensifies to deep bright red, starting at the leaf tips. Quite the show. The flowers are typical of the species, clusters of small white flowers on panicles on 12” stems in early spring, just as the foliage is emerging. It needs light shade or morning sun, but with too much shade it will not show the red highlights. It likes a nice rich soil and consistent moisture. Very hardy, z4 at least.
